Here’s an essential guide to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how to examine your website. This will let you see if your website has received any ON-page optimization. To assess if your website is in desperate need of some SEO love.

I’m doing this because we regularly speak with businesses that have received or are now receiving poor SEO for their website. They are either highly dissatisfied with the terrible service they received or refuse to realize they are spending time and money with unscrupulous search engine optimization companies. These businesses believe what they are told and need more knowledge to determine whether or not the work is being accomplished.

SEO has traditionally been regarded as a dark art, with no one truly understanding how websites rose to the top of Search Engine Result Pages. If they did, SEO companies would not tell you how they were doing it. We are in a golden age of SEO when those who do it correctly and successfully reap the benefits. The criminal procedures to get to that coveted No. 1 slot are now largely obsolete. It is no longer about how much money you can spend on spam links to your website. It’s all about the knowledge and abilities of a reputable SEO business, which you should look for. Otherwise, you risk wasting time and money on a service different from what you expected.

I would like to provide a checklist of items to review to determine whether your website has been optimized.

Optimization of the landing page.

Tags in the title:

Limitations: Keywords must be 70 characters long, with the most significant keywords appearing first.

How to Test-

  • Navigate to your website in a browser.
  • Right-click on any empty spot and select View Page Source (or something similar).
  • To open the search tool, use Ctrl + F and type ‘title.’
  • The first line of code highlighted is the one containing your title tag.
  • Look to the right; the title is all that follows the ” ” on that line.

Things to keep in mind –

  • Every web page should have a unique title! So, if you only optimize your home page and not the rest of your site, you’re leaving a lot of optimization and potential on the table.
  • Words already in your title tag and URL of your website do not need to be repeated.
  • Including a keyword ten times in each title tag does not guarantee that you will appear for that keyword. And it is considered SPAMMING.

Description Keywords:

Limitations – Must be up to 160 characters long and legible by humans, not just keywords!

How to Test –

  • Navigate to your website in a browser.
  • Right-click on the space and select View Page Source.
  • To open the search tool, use Ctrl + F and type ‘description.’
  • The first line of code highlighted is the one containing your description tag.
  • Look to the right for the description, anything between the ” ” on that line.

Things to keep in mind –

The most important thing to remember is that this will describe your website when it appears in a search result. So being eye-catching and explicit about what you do is crucial.

Include the most important keywords for that page; this increases the usefulness of those keywords.

Page Information:

Limitations: You are only restricted by the quality of your content rather than the precise bits of data described above.

How to Test – Examine your material on each page and make sure the keywords in your title and description tags are related to your content. This does not imply that you should repeat your keywords a million times (roughly twice in 100 words, or 2% is OK) throughout your content; doing so is considered spamming and will result in a ranking penalty. However, the amount of material should be substantial, often around 300 words rather than a few paragraphs, which applies to all pages on your website.

Things to keep in mind-

  • Keywords should not be spammed; this does not work!
  • Each page requires content and must be of high quality and relevance!
  • It is essential to have a good-sized body of quality original text.

Internal tying:

Check for links to other pages on your site inside the content. So, if you have a SERVICES page, bullet points the services and links to the appropriate pages.

Labeled images:

– Label each image with a term that describes the image or service/product.

How to Test-

  • Navigate to your website in a browser.
  • Right-click an empty spot and select View Page Source (or something similar).
  • To open the search tool, use Ctrl + F and type ‘ALT.’
  • The first line of code highlighted is the one containing your title tag.
  • Look to the right; the ALT TEXT on that line is anything between the “. “

Things to keep in mind –

  • Search engines cannot see a picture. However, this image is labeled with ALT TEXT, which aids in its discovery on search results pages.
  • Each image should be labeled with a unique keyword.

These are the most essential and fundamental aspects of on-page optimization and the clearest indicator of whether you receive SEO. If these are done effectively, your SEO business will only bother with some things that must be done!
