Journey Game: How Can I Be Healthier?

I love playing games. Contests using myself especially entertain us. One game I really delight in that kicks in within my travels is the game “how green can I be? very well My biggest challenge throughout playing this game, at the home or on the road, is not depriving myself of food or basics given that they aren’t green.

It’s a straightforward game when I’m throughout environmentally sensitive locations, similar to Boulder, CO, Portland, OR EVEN, Austin, TX, Greenville, SOUTH CAROLINA, Seattle, WA, and Buenos aires, DC. In such locations, I could easily recycle and avoid non-recyclable items like styrofoam. It’s also simpler to find locally grown as well as organic foods. Health food stores, as well as restaurants, also abound within greener cities, making it easier for me personally to enjoy fresh bounty as well as organic snack options.

The overall game is more fun when I am in less environmentally delicate locations. It’s fun due to the presented challenges. How do you become green when on the road? Difficult topics: styrofoam to-go storage containers; plastic, not glass or even metal; Mcdonald’s or Hamburger King; recycling or garbage; individual toiletries vs your personal or bulk; rental vehicle or mass transit; or even fresh fruits and veggies versus either canned items or maybe packaged foods.

For me typically the toiletries are easy — I bring my own. My spouse and I bring our own shampoo, deodorization deodorizer, toothpaste, and mouthwash (which I now have in a si bottle). I tend to not vacation with lotions or I’d personally bring my own that way too. Oh, and I have a violescent perfume stick too. On rare occasions, I’ll utilize toiletries provided by a lodge, if they seem supernatural — which sadly, basically very often. But even when it’s green I stick with these toiletries and save their packaging waste of the individual versions.

I ran out of toothpaste, which I dispensed at home in a contact case, on one getaway and chose to not exchange. Brushing your teeth without the composite is almost as good, I contended. I wonder what occurred to the toothpowder such as what my mom used to utilize (uh oh, I feeling research and another post from that memory)? That would be a great traveling companion, as well as a wise decision at home. The decision came out associated with my game as much as anything at all.

Fresh fruits and veggies tend to be preferred for my eating pleasures, as I enjoyed on vacation to Asheville, NC, as well as Greenville, SC. But every so often they aren’t an option, similar to on a trip to South Representante Island, TX. So what can fresh mean in our sizzling, flat, and crowded entire world, our ever-shrinking substantive transported foods? Not discontinued or processed? Grown along with sold locally? Fresh ice-covered? Canned produce doesn’t trim it for me, not even in which delightful fruit cocktail My spouse and I adored as a little girl (and horrors, maraschino cherries are actually banished too).

When I journey I keep my choices toward local foods however succumb to unprocessed veggies whenever local isn’t available. I realize frozen veggies as most likely healthier than “fresh” as they are typically processed sooner right after harvesting than what we contact “fresh” veggies in the shop (and yes, that’s an upcoming article too).

Transportation? I will choose mass transit if it’s feasible, over renting a vehicle. And when I rent an auto I keep it small, and in many cases green when I rent some sort of Prius. I wish mass morceau were feasible more often, nevertheless, sometimes I choose to go to areas where there isn’t reliable or ample service, or my plan is tight enough that I actually don’t feel I have the posh of using the existing size transit. If I played our game to “win” I would not be going places that will didn’t have mass transportation, or only go locations where the hotel shuttle has been sufficient for my requirements. Hiking and biking could be winners over cars, or perhaps mass transit, come to consider it.

One issue that will challenge my get-greener online game is the issue of these recycling. That sorta incorporates the particular styrofoam issue as well. My partner and I generally forgo styrofoam, no matter what. I’ve skipped eating certain foods at conferences because they ended up messy and styrofoam plates/bowls were the only service selection. I’ll ask for foil avoiding a styrofoam to-go burial container. At a Boulder restaurant, years ago, they gave me a new water glass as my very own to-go container, with the comprehension I’d bring it back before long. And the True Grit with Ridgway, CO, let me have my leftover chili household in the bowl it was functioned in, again with the offer I’d return it. People are cool experiences in my opinion.

But once in a while, I’m eventually left without a choice, other than causing my to-go meal within the restaurant, and that’s not an environment-friendly option either since it waste materials my money, and the foods I purchased. Other than styrofoam, precycling — a better way regarding recycling — is easy for me when I generally can choose a can lid over plastic bottles or glass over metal. And I simply buy bottled water when the local’s water is “so bad” that bottled water will keep me drinking water.

Other game strategies I’ve adopted to earn my “how green am I able to be” game include:

pick green hotels when achievable (and of course EnvironmentallyFriendlyHoters. com is my favorite site for producing that choice)
carrying plastic-type utensils and chopsticks in order to snack anytime without throwing away disposables
use my chopsticks for stir sticks
traveling with my own stainless steel pot
reuse the same disposable goblet during the outing, when I’ve truly forgotten my mug
take a stainless steel water bottle with me at night everywhere, filling it having fountain or faucet waters
travel with a cup We can use it to top my waters bottle or drink in my hotel room
keep used grocery bags in the car avoiding the plastic/paper decision
don’t use anything but low VOC paints in addition to finishes to keep our indoor air quality high
avoid clean-up chemicals, using vinegar and also baking soda for almost all my cleaning supplies
traveling with organic, whole foods, food bars to avoid getting junk food
ask for no house cleaning services in hotels that have no sheet and soft towel reuse program
donate applied clothes, technology, and furnishings when I don’t want them anymore

I keep that means to adopt a few other tactics that may put me ahead inside the points.

a reusable market bag in my suitcase for unexpected shopping

take a storage area container to restaurants to get my own Doggy Bag (BYOB)

carrying a CFL with my suitcase to use in hotel rooms I haven’t adopted that type of lighting yet

buy only the things I need and will use

The enjoyment and challenge for me should be to find increasingly more ways We can lighten my footstep down my path of greening my life. And to do so not lowering my lifestyle expectations. I can have it all — a fabulous, comfortable life, as well as a green, healthy planet.
