Spencer-Van Etten Central School District covers an expansive area that spans ten towns across four counties, where weather conditions can differ drastically across the district. We make decisions regarding whether to close or delay schools based on the safety of school communities – please ensure your child’s main office has your current phone number, and stay tuned to Radio/TV for information regarding school closures.
School Messenger
School Messenger is a system designed to allow schools and districts to send general and emergency notifications through phone, email, text messaging, or web-based apps such as PowerSchool. This system can quickly send thousands of announcements such as school closings, early dismissals, and late starts as soon as they occur – this includes school closings, early layoffs, and late openings! Parents/Guardians and students who opted in can receive these alerts. In order to do this successfully, they must (1) opt-in and 2) have their mobile device number stored with either PowerSchool or district (for parents/guardians/students).
SchoolMessenger provides teachers, students, and parents a way to engage with their school or district and connect. Teachers can create discussion groups for their classes, inviting students, parents, and guardians to join. Teachers can send individual chat messages as well as manage the preferences of group members. Furthermore, SchoolMessenger includes tools designed to assist classroom organization and collaboration.
SchoolMessenger also offers a full version of its app designed specifically to send SchoolMessenger Broadcast messages. This app is targeted towards parents, students, and teachers affiliated with an individual school or district and can be downloaded via the Apple App Store (for iPhone) or Google Play (for Android devices).
SchoolMessenger app is free for parents, students, and teachers associated with schools or districts; however, a subscription is necessary in order to use its Broadcast features. A subscription can be purchased on either the App Store or online from schoolmessenger.com/subscribers/ and used on any device with SchoolMessenger installed – with multiple pricing options depending on how large a school or district is; single schools can purchase individual subscriptions while districts may purchase bulk subscriptions covering various schools in a community.
